TL;DR

Convert STL to GLTF in your browser to bring 3D-print geometry into web viewers, glTF tools, and game engines. You get one self-contained .gltf file with a neutral grey PBR material.

What the converter produces

The STL is read as a triangle mesh, from either ASCII or binary STL, and written as a glTF 2.0 file in JSON form. The binary geometry buffer is embedded in the .gltf as a base64 data URI, so you get a single file with no separate .bin to keep track of. The mesh receives a simple grey PBR material so it renders predictably in any glTF viewer.

STL stores one normal per triangle, so the converted model is flat shaded and every facet is visible. That is accurate for CAD parts but looks faceted on organic shapes. Colors are retained only for binary STL files with the recognized COLOR= header, and those colors are kept as vertex colors.

Fix scale and orientation

STL has no units. Files made for 3D printing are almost always in millimeters, while glTF defines one unit as one meter. A 50 mm bracket therefore arrives 50 meters tall in a glTF viewer or game engine. Scale it by 0.001 in your engine or in Blender to get real-world size.

CAD and slicer software usually treat Z as up, while glTF is Y-up. The converter does not rotate the model, so a part may appear lying on its back. Rotate it -90 degrees around the X axis to stand it upright.

GLTF or GLB?

Choose .gltf when you want to read or edit the JSON, compare files in version control, or debug a pipeline. Choose GLB for delivery: base64 encoding makes a .gltf about a third larger than the equivalent GLB, and GLB loads faster. The STL to GLB converter produces the binary version of the same result.

Preparing an STL model for texturing

  1. 1

    Clean the mesh

Import the STL or the converted GLTF into Blender, run Merge by Distance to weld duplicate vertices, then apply Shade Auto Smooth so curved areas look smooth while hard edges stay crisp.

  2. 2

    Reduce polygons if needed

Scans and high-resolution print files can have millions of triangles. A Decimate modifier brings them down to a real-time budget.

  3. 3

    Unwrap UVs

STL never contains UV coordinates. Unwrap the model, for example with Smart UV Project, before painting or generating textures.

  4. 4

    Texture it

Export as GLB and upload it to TextureFast to generate a Base Color and PBR maps from a text prompt.

FAQ

Why is my model huge after converting STL to GLTF?

STL files for printing are usually in millimeters, and glTF reads every unit as a meter. Scale the model by 0.001 to restore its real size.

Why does the converted model look faceted?

STL stores one normal per triangle and the converter keeps those normals. Weld vertices and apply smooth or auto smooth shading in Blender for a smooth look.

Does the .gltf need a separate .bin file?

No. The geometry buffer is embedded in the .gltf as a data URI, so the single file is complete.

Ready to texture your model?

After you convert, view, or inspect your asset, upload a UV-unwrapped GLB, GLTF, OBJ, or FBX to the TextureFast texturing dashboard and generate production PBR maps from a text prompt in seconds.
